inmatarian's unused blog

it's not that unused.

5/31/09 10:35 pm - import possibilities

So, the Ubuntu experiment has went better than expected. I never once felt the need to return to windows in the last month. I'm sticking with it, at least until the 09.10 upgrade breaks everything on me.

Yesterday Angie and I went to go see Pixar's Up. Man that movie was great. Not to spoil much, but I love how they captured the depressing human condition in the first 10 minutes of the movie. If they ended it there, I'm sure this thing would have won some crazy art film awards.

Anyway, I'm picking up Python. I dove in head first about two weeks ago, and I am just loving this freaking language (2.6 dialect). It's a little weird not having to end everything with end or } but I got used to it really fast. It make programs pretty damn readable. To facilitate my python education, most of my experiments have been in pygame, of course. That's also cool, being able to get shit up and running really fast. Here's my first experiment: mapview using the tileset and "hub" map from Wayward.

5/5/09 11:50 pm - i'm totally good for it

Just got my FICO credit score back. First time I got a number associated with it, weird to see it so high, I was expecting it to be dismal.

Anyway, I made the switch to Ubuntu as an experiment and I freaking love it. I don't feel compelled at all to return to XP. It's only been a week and I feel like I have my dream set up already (firefox, thunderbird, xchat, pidgin, audacious). I have just a few things to finish ironing out the details, like my encrypted passwords file. I got used to password safe auto opening it and I lost track of where the file actually was.

Also, Angie and I just spent the day together. Three Year anniversary since we met. :)

3/10/09 11:11 pm - oh god its wrist o clock

Good ways to waste time:
* File your taxes online.

No wait, that's not a good way at all.

2/17/09 11:32 pm - what the ffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

I normally don't do these, but this one was too good to pass up.

What are your chances of getting a tapeworm?

XD

2/16/09 11:20 pm - love this

So, love is cool. It lacks a few specific features I'd want, but otherwise it's a nice demonstration of how to link sdl and lua yet again. I think I got esdemo1 hooked on it though.

SDL_LOTS_OF_WRAPPERS
Anyways, I went back to play with sdl_mixer, sdl_image, and sdl_ttf again. It was actually stupid easy working with them once I got the linker issues resolved. Trying to build from source in the past caused me heartache, so just going with the provided binaries simplifed things greatly. It's only proved to me more and more that reinventing the wheel is totally not the way to go. Specifically when you have a girlfriend that you'd rather spend time with than code, you need to maximize the utility of the time you do actually spend coding for fun.

The number of dependencies does shoot through the roof, though.

ROOT CANAL
I got that lingering toothache for the last few months fixed with invasive surgery. I have a crown now in my mouth. Considering how close to the "future" we actually are now, my transition into an artificial being has begun. See you fleshbag jerks later.

LAYOFFS
The guy sitting next to me at work got laid off. Sucks, because that dude was pretty cool to talk to. His desk has been taken over by a guy who doesn't talk much, except to make the occasional funny quip.

STOP MOTION
Coraline was a cool movie. But, I probably should have had the 3d glasses, and, gone when there wasn't like a million children in the theater. For the record, I took Angie to see it with me, and I wasn't that creepy guy staring at your kids.

ALL WILL BE KNOWN
This season of Battlestar Galactica is turning out great, albeit convenient. They've been dangling plot lines in our face for so long that now its resolution resolution resolution tom zareck resolution. I don't think it would have ruined the series to let us in on a couple of these things a little earlier, rather than all at the end.

VD
I got a cold on Valentine's day, so it was rice soup and shivering on the couch with Angie for me this weekend. She loved the Yo Yo plushy.

FLESHBAGS
I've been playing too much Left4Dead lately. Or, too little. I can't decide, maybe I need to play a few more games to figure out. Anyone with xbox want to play with me? I love the crap out of the Dead Air scenario, we'll play that.

1/11/09 09:17 pm - the toothache blues

So Angie and I rang in the new years by not going down to Times Square to watch the balls drop. We said "fuck that" and got Chinese. Then we went to the movies with the agreement that we would watch whatever was next to start. That turned out to be the one with Jim Carrey. I enjoyed it. Then we watched the ball drop on TV and high-fived for not being one of those frozen people being forced to listen to the jonas sisters.

So, who'se ready for the last season of Battlestar Galactica?

12/25/08 12:49 am - insert gifts here

I thought I'd so something different this year and post right before Christmas, rather than right after. Here's some stuff that puts the holiday in focus.

Employment
Finished a full year at my current job, without getting fired. Though, at the performance review, my boss effectively told me to slow the hell down.

Werewolves and Zombie Nazis
I'll be playing this for the next month or so.

Brain Expanding
I'm reading up on Neural Nets. Crazy stuff. I'm trying to implement a simple one in lua, but getting nowhere. I need to find more reading material on the subject.

Angie's Gifts
She won't find out what they are on here either. :P

Passing
And my uncle passed away earlier this week. Everyone believes it was complications after his heart surgery from several weeks ago. He was a great man, and will be missed.

... very missed.
